Musical Improv Coaching for Teams and Performers

Vocal Confidence. Grounded Performance. Ensemble Connection.

I coach musical improv teams, indie ensembles, and performers who want to enhance their vocal confidence, scene-to-song work, and ensemble connection. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and available online worldwide, my coaching is designed to meet your needs.

Whether you are forming a new team, coaching an existing ensemble, or developing your own musical improv skills, my approach helps performers grow in harmony, grounded acting, duet work, spontaneity, and emotionally connected performances. I also offer online musical improv coaching for performers and teams outside the Bay Area.

Jessica Neighbor:

Musical Improv Coach

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Musical improv works best when we stop trying to be clever and start listening and connecting.

The strongest musical scenes come from emotional connection, grounded acting, vocal freedom, and performers who trust each other enough to play honestly.

My coaching blends over 20 years of professional vocal coaching experience with theater training, musical improvisation, and ensemble-based performance work.

Whether your team is building a monoscene, improving scene-to-song transitions, or simply trying to feel more confident singing in front of people, I help performers get out of their heads and into their bodies so the music feels connected, playable, and alive.

Coaching Areas

Scene-to-Song Skills

Learning how to recognize emotional shifts, repeated ideas, and playable moments that naturally launch songs.

Vocal Confidence

Helping improvisers sing with more freedom, projection, breath support, resonance, and ease under pressure.

Harmony & Ensemble Singing

Building stronger listening skills, harmonies, vocal layering, and musical collaboration within an ensemble.

Duets

Exploring emotional connection, contrast, musical variation, and playful listening between singing partners.

Monoscene Musical Forms

Creating emotionally grounded musical worlds with strong openings, thematic callbacks, and connected ensemble storytelling.

Acting & Emotional Grounding

Using physicality, subtext, emotional point of view, and relationship dynamics to create more believable and compelling scenes.

My Coaching Style

My coaching style is warm, collaborative, and highly actionable.

I believe performers grow fastest when they feel supported enough to take risks and receive clear, practical adjustments they can apply onstage immediately.

I tend to focus less on forcing jokes or plot-heavy storytelling and more on:

  • emotional point of view

  • grounded reactions

  • vocal connection

  • listening

  • specificity

  • ensemble trust
